Orientalism

*Orientalism Edward said is a canonical text of cultural studies in which he has challenged the concept of oriental’s or the difference between east and west, as he puts it he says that with the start of European colonization the European come in contact with the lesser developed countries of the east. They found their civilization and culture them exotic, and established the science of orientalism, or the people from these exotic civilizations. The main thing for the European visitor was a European representation of the orient and it’s had a privileged communal significance for the journalist and his French readers. American will not feel quite the same about the orient, which for them is much more likely to be associated very differently with the east, china and Japan mainly. Unlike the Americans, the French and British less so the German, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Italians and have had a long tradition of what I shall be calling orientalism, a way of coming to terms with the experience. The orient is not only adjustment to Europe, it is also the place of Europe‘s greatest and richest and oldest colonies, the source of its civilization and language, its cultural constant, and one of its deepest and most recurring images of the other.

     Edward said argues that the Europeans divided the world into parts. The east and the west or the occident and the orient or the civilized and the uncivilized. This was totally an artificial boundary, and it was laid on the basis of the concept of them and us or their and ours. The Europeans used orientalism to define themselves. Some particular attributes, and whether the Orientals weren’t the occident’s were the Europeans defined themselves as the superior race compared to the Orientals and the justified their colonization by this concept. They said that it was their duty towards the ward to civilize the uncivilized ward. The main problem, however, arose when the European started generalizing the attributes they associated with Orientals, and started parting these artificial characteristics associated with Orientals in their western world through their scientific reports, literary work and other media sources. What HAPPENED WAS THAT IT CREATED ACERTAIN IMAGE ABOUT THE ORIENTAS IN THEIR European mind and doing that infused bias in the European attitude toward the Orientals. This prejudice was also found in the orientalists and all their scientific research and reports were under the influence of this. The generalized attributes associated with the Orientals can be seen even today. For example, the Arabs are defined as uncivilized people and Islam is seen as religion of the terrorist. Edward said explains how the science of orientalism developed and how the Orientals started considering the Orientals as non human beings. The Orientals divided the world in to parts by using the concept of ours and theirs. An imaginary geographical line was down between what was ours and what was theirs. The orients were regarded as uncivilized people and the western said that since they were the refined race it was their duty to civilize people those people and in order to achieve their goal, they had to colonize and rule the orients. They said that the orients themselves were incapable of running their own government. The Europeans also through that they had the right to represent the Orientals in the west all by themselves. In doing so, shaped the Orientals the way they perceived them or in other wards they were reinitializing the orient. Various teams have been sent to the east were oriental is silently observed to the Orientals by living with them and everything the west .This resulted in the generalization whatever was seen by the projected to the civilized world of the west.           The most important use of oriental ism to the European was that they defined themselves by defining the Orientals. ABSTRACT;

   

                India is multilingual and multicultural from north to south and east to west. India speaks many language and Indian people use the English as a second language. Indian people speak the Hindi as a first language. We can see the double face of English in India.

 

     WHY DON’T SPEAK THE ENGLISH INDIAN PEOPLE?

    

         Only reason is greatest mass of Indian doesn’t know English language that’s they resects English language.

   

         When India was free from the in 1947. British symbol were replaced but the institution and instruments were retained. At that time our government decided that English was not official language. There were aspirations and pressures to make Hindi or Hindustani as the national language of the new nation, but ultimately resigning the multinational character of the country, the Indian constitution did not speak of the nation language of the union. The difference will be only regarding which language will replace it and when the final decision was that it would be Hindi devanageri script.

       

·       English official language in India

  

          During the prescribed period of year for the complete change of the official language of the union. There was growing political opposition in some states to the progressive use of Hindi for official purpose. Indian are using numbers of regional language and dialect Hindi is over accepted national language because 36% of the Indian are use Hindi as their mother tongue. So English is abused in India as second language and official language.

*English as a court language;

   

         During the freedom the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru declares that Hindi as a first language because all the Indian people speak the Hindi and they don’t know and understand the English is a official language in India but today in India the supreme court of India speak the Hindi and high court of states used the official language. And the judgment decree and order must be accompanied by an authorized translation in English.

 

          Today we can see the most of the ENGLISH medium school in India who run by the private trust. Minority organization missionaries and the central government English medium are prestigious and is in great demand. For the replacement of English in higher education like the under graduate, postgraduate and professional college. Indian language medium available in many colleges, particularly in arts and humanities at the undergraduate level.

   In India English may be used various place under them description. We use English as a first language and as a second language and foreign language.

·          In my opinion the language is not all the symbol of the slavery. The ideas which have resisted us to think global are never ever symbol of the slavery.

Many educated people only use English for our purpose and many times English language destroyed the Gujarat people because they don’t understand the English and English is destroyed for the journalist profession.  So English is a benefit and destroyed in widely people.

Poetry:-

American literature is very important in the ward, but it’s not important as the Indian literature. American literature is written in English language and Indian literature is written in Sanskrit but after some time many great author its tralastion in the form of English. Poetry means ‘prose and verse’ in which is written in the form of English. Poetry means the poet expresses her view about this strange word. American poetry embodies a clearly identification tension between tradition and future and old forms and new forms. American literature tries separating itself from the tradition. American poetry has its origin in the rich oral traditions of Native American culture. Other cultures have contributed to the rich heritage of American poetry. Spanish explores to current HISPANIC and CHICANO and Chicano poetry. American poetry tradition also has grown in many other languages, from chines to Yelldish as the result of centuries of immigration to the United States.                                                                         

         Poetry includes the many parts like epic poem sonnet, in which Shakespeare sonnet is very important in the ward. And the American literature come too many forms of poetry, like the lyric ode, elegy, ballad, and all the forms are given the curiosity of the poetry. 

     In which given the brief description of the poetry foams.

         

The epic:-

            

The epic is an ancient form of the literature derived from the Greek literature. The blind poet ‘Homer’ wrote the two epics ‘the iliod ‘the ODESSY. The epic is a long narrative written in verse and its deal with loftiness of feeling and nobility of ideas. The epic is long tale in poetry with famous heroes or its principal character and its weaves together into an artistic form. The language of the epic is always noble and exalted and it the epic fits the words and deeds of god and heroes .The epic is written in grand style. In epic tradition, we come across five grate epics of the world. They are the Iliod and the odyssey ‘homer, ‘Aenaid’ BY ‘VIRGIL’ ‘divine comedy by Dante and ‘paradise lost by Milton ’

·                     The lyric is a literary form of poetry. The lyric refer to short poem and lyric falls under the category of subjective poetry. The lyric poets include powerful feelings while writing the poem. Thus intensity of emotions or passions is the main quality of the lyric. The lyric poets like the Keats, Shally, Tennyson, and Swinburn.

·          The ode :

·                       The ode poem falls under the category of lyrical poetry. Ode is longer than lyrical poetry. It is a serious dignified composition. The always in rhyme. The Greek ode has two forms. They are the Daridan ode and the lesbion   ode.

The ballad: The ballad arises out of falls literature. It is one of the oldest forms of English literature.  The ballad is short story in ease, originally intended to be sung deeds rather than thought

           The ballad included the topics like a thrilling adventure, a family disaster love and war and the life. The story in the ballad may be farce and tragic.      

     

The Elegy:-

                      

·        The elegy is ancient Greek foam of poetry and it was written in a dactylic hexameter followed by dactylic pentameter. In Greek poetry the elegy covered up various themes like war love, politic, or lamentation for the dead. In English literature is best known of the elegy is Thomas Gray’s elegy is written in country churchyard. Milton wrote the elegy ‘Lycidas’ on the death of his friend.

·                American poets created a patriotic poetry as a defining literature for the new nation. Puritan poetry who had settled in New England the first poets of the American colonies.  Puritan poets had grown up in England during a period when Chrétien epic poetry.

·                    Maryland colony, Ebenezer cook, and Richard Lewis wrote accomplished satirical poems based on Brties pastoral models. American poets used the British literary model of the mock epic as tool to satirize and criticize British culture. The Fireside poets like William Cullen, Bryant, Henry, word worth and And John Green leaf DURING THE 19^TH century, black and white poets wrote about the abolition of slaves.

American drama began to diverge from BRITISH drama by the time of Andrew Jackson‘s presidency from 1828 to 1838. Most American plays capied British models until the early 20^th century American drama achieved international recognition with the psychological realiosm of plays by Eugene o Neil and their searing investigation or characters inner lives.

·       MELO DRAMA:-

·                MELO DRAMA IS CONSIDERED a debased from of tragedy. The term melodrama use for a play of a sensation type, relying for its effect a physical action, purely theatrical language and behavior, and naïve sentiment. THE character of melodrama are mealy purpose an extravagant story of crime revenge the evil of drink or gambling, last missing ets.

PROSE:-

CRITICAL APPRECITION OF THE PLAY

       Samuel Becket wrote the waiting for Godot. And Samuel expresses the critical Appreciation in this novel .Waiting for Godot is one of the most popular novels in the modern age .Waiting for Godot is a shining example of the theatre of absurd.  Estragon and Vladimir, two men who are obviously on their luck, find themselves on a loanly country road waiting for man called Godot who never actually arrives. But who does send messenger boys to let them know

That he will certainly come tomorrow. Beckett uses valdimir and Estragon‘s actions to comment on his view of mans relationship to God and to other man. In this

Novel two characters Vladimir and Estragon wait for Godot to much time in tree. In this viewing play we have to each other .In fact novice viewing this play for the first often fails to note any significant difference between the characters for the other. Waiting for Godot is the most frequent statement Heard after one has seen or finished reading a play from the theatre or the absurd Movement.

         The beginning of play two men Vladimir and Estragon meet near tree. Hay conveys on various topics and reveal that they are waiting there for a man named Godot.While they wait at that time two other friend name POZZO is on his way to the market to sell his slave ,LUCKY. He pauses or while to converse with Vladimir and estragon lucky entertains them by dancing and thinking .And then pozzo and Lucky leave

In this novel the setting is the same, and the time is the same in both acts.Eachact begins early in the morning. When the Vladimir and estragon wait for the Godot and godot has not come. And the first act come the two men pozzo and Lucky. At that time Estragon trying to take off his boot when Vladimir enters. THE the men greet each other. Vladimir examines his hat while estragon struggle with his boot .They discuss the version of the story of the two chickens. While he eats. Vladimir and estragon circle around lucky inspecting him. They notice a sere on his neck begin to ask him a question, but pozzo tells them to leave him alone. Vladimir suddenly explodes with anger at pozzo treatment of lucky. But then seems embarrassed at his out burst .Pozzo decide to go, but then decides to stay and smoke another pipe .Vladimir want to leave but pozzo reminds him of his appointment with godot.Estragon begins to wander aloud why lucky does not put down his bags. Vladimir asks pozzo if he wants to get rid of lucky. Pozzo responds that he does and is taking him to the fair to sell him. And after some time Vladimir ask him to tell lucky to think. But pozzo says that he cannot think without his head and he begins to think aloud spouting a long storm of words and phrase that amount to gibberish, and pozzo and lucky leave. Lucky dance is merely clumsy shuffling which is a complete disappointment to Vladimir and estragon. Lucky of speech is an attempt. However, futile make statement about man and god. And pozzo and lucky departure and Vladimir realize that he is glad that the episode helped pass the time. Constantly, the two are faced with finding some way of passing the time while waiting. Even through estragon philosophically points that time would have passed in any case thus the entire episode seemingly has no real significance to them .They return to wandering what they can do now bed ides wait for godot , Since they can do nothing. They decide to a make little conversation about whether or not they had previously known pozzo and lucky, but no agreement is reached estragon then return to tending his caching feet. And the last after some time one little bay come to the Vladimir and estragon. And this boy is massager from her. Godot but the boy is two frightened to come close to the tramps. They question the boy delivers his message me godot told me to tell you he won’t come this evening but surely tomorrow the tramps question the boy about me godot told me to tell you he want come the evening but surely tomorrow . Me godot does not beat him but he does beat the boy brother. Godot is equated with god. And the boy says that godot is not come today they come surely tomorrow. And the boy messenger go and Vladimir and estragon happened the alone. At that time estragon said I have wait for the godot and they surely come tomorrow .We now dissolver part of the reason of for Vladimir ‘s singing he is happy because he slept all night long . Estragon has almost forgotten the appearance of pozzo and lucky except for bone he was given to gnaw on. The wound on estragon leg in turn, causes Vladimir to notice that estragon does not have this boots on condincidently, there is a pair of boots lying on the ground, but estragon does not have his boots on coincidently, there is a tree whom near stand the estragon and Vladimir was threat and they sleeping near the tree there even the attempt arrive at a conclusion totally exhausts them, and with the familiar refrain “we are waiting for godot “they abandon was problem. The Vladimir and estragon was not forgotten the godot but they waiting the before the long struggle.

After some time arrival of pozzo and lucky suddenly and without warning, as in the first act pozzo and lucky come back on stage their arrival puts an end to Vladimir and estragon games. Thing have changed significantly for pozzo and lucky .The long rope which bound them together now much shorter. Binding them closer and closer, furthermore, pozzo and lucky are physically changed. pozzo is blind lucky is dump but entire scene is played without the audience knowing that lucky is now dump .As they enter, Staggering under their loud , lucky now carries suitcases filled with sand. Lucky falls and drank pozzo down with him. And then departure of the pozzo and lucky meanwhile Vladimir and estragon alone. While Vladimir and pozzo have been talking, estragon has been sleeping again in his fatal position , Vladimir feeling lonely , awakens him, Significantly since estragon was sleeping in his fetal position has dreams were happy once , but even so , Vladimir refuses to listen to them . Vladimir‘s final final speech entrance of the messenger suggests that he feels a deep enragements from the universe. Something tells him to be her at this place at this time, with his friend estragon while waiting for godot. Furthermore, he is aware of misery, a disquietedness which he cannot understand life seem as through it is astride of a grave and there is to be a “difficult birth “for the grave –digger puts on the farces with the arrival of pozzo and lucky, Vladimir and estragon think that help have arrived from godot but they soon realize that it is just pozzo and lucky. Estragon wants to leave then, but Vladimir must remind him once again that they cannot thin statement clarifies the idea that Vladimir and estragon represent all mankind units relationship togod.
